A naming ceremony is when a new birth is celebrated or a child is welcomed into the wider circle of their relatives or friends.

It is not a baptism or christening, but a rite that can be traced back to Roman times. It is an occasion when parents and Godparents or Guardians become more fully aware of their responsibilities and family relationships deepened.

It is not meant to replace a traditional service, but is offered as an alternative to either those who have no religious convictions or to parents who do not want (for whatever reason) their child to be baptised in church.

It is also a time to recognise the people who will have an important role in the child's development, for example grandparents or special friends whose relationship is very special in a child's life.

If you choose a Naming Service it does not mean that your child cannot have a religious Baptismal Service at some other time.
